One hinge at a time.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE

A squeak is a clue, not a diagnosis. Notice where it happens, whether the door rubs, and what changed after each check. A useful record is better than a guess.

02 / INVESTIGATE

Meet the noisy little hinge.

Move the door. Mark the moment. Start with what you can observe.

SQUEAK DNA · WHAT DO YOU HEAR?

A visual model, not a measurement or automatic diagnosis.

03 / UNDERSTAND

Small parts. A clearer picture.

Get to know the moving parts before choosing your next check.

HINGE ANATOMY / BUTT HINGEPINSCREWLEAFKNUCKLEIllustration of a typical butt hinge. Hardware varies.

A little mechanical literacy.

Select a part to see what it does—and what to look for. Concealed cabinet hinges have different adjustment and lubrication instructions.

04 / THE FIXING WORKBENCH

A thoughtful check, then a note.

Simple checks help organize observations. Only record work you have actually done.

YOUR NEXT CHECKS
Stop if the door is heavy, fire-rated, fitted with a closer, dropping, cracked or difficult to support. Do not remove hinge pins or loosen load-bearing fixings. Ask a qualified repairer.

Never force a stiff door. Keep fingers away from the hinge gap and keep children clear.

Leave a workshop note

Your perceived noise: 0 = none, 5 = very intrusive. Not decibels.
05 / REMEMBER

The silence diary.

A small record today makes the next repair a little less mysterious.

REPAIR & RECURRENCE
THE SOUND OVER TIME

Each pair shows your before and after scores. Date labels follow your records. This is a personal trend, not an acoustic measurement.

A squeak that quickly returns deserves a fresh look at alignment, contamination and wear. Repeating the same treatment may hide a different problem.
06 / THE REPAIR LIBRARY

Less guesswork. More understanding.

A practical starting point for squeaky door hinges and cabinet doors.

01 /

Find where the sound begins

Open the door slowly while standing clear of the hinge gap. Listen near each hinge without touching the moving parts. Check whether the latch, frame, floor or closer makes the sound instead.

  • Record opening versus closing
  • Note the angle as an estimate
  • Look for rub marks and uneven gaps
02 /

Clean before choosing a lubricant

Wipe accessible surface dust with a soft cloth. Avoid flooding the hinge or spraying nearby finishes. Before using any lubricant, identify the hinge and read its maker’s care instructions and the product label.

  • Protect floors and paintwork
  • Check material compatibility
  • Use only the amount directed
03 /

Recheck instead of repeating

A door that rubs, sags or clicks may need adjustment or replacement rather than more lubrication. Record how long improvement lasts. If fixings are loose, damaged or stripped, have the support and hardware assessed.

  • Do not force adjustment screws
  • Do not dismantle soft-close units
  • Seek help for structural movement

Questions from the workshop

Why does my door squeak only at certain angles?

Contact and load change as a door moves. An angle range helps you reproduce the symptom, but does not identify the cause. Check hinges, rubbing surfaces and other moving hardware.

Can one lubricant fix every squeaky hinge?

No. Hinge designs, coatings, loads and environments differ. Penetrating products, dry lubricants and greases are not interchangeable. Follow the hinge maker’s maintenance guidance; some sealed or soft-close mechanisms should not be lubricated by the user.

What if a cabinet door clicks or sits unevenly?

Concealed hinges use model-specific mounting and adjustment systems. Look for obvious contact or loose mounting without dismantling the mechanism. Find the exact model’s instructions or ask a cabinet fitter.

When should I stop DIY checks?

Stop for heavy or fire-rated doors, closers, cracked frames, major sagging, a falling-door risk or fixings that cannot hold securely. Keep the door supported by its existing hardware and use a qualified repairer.

Are the scores decibel measurements?

No. The 0–5 scale is a personal rating. Use the same listening position and similar opening speed to make your own before-and-after notes more consistent. SQUEAKSCAPE does not perform automatic sound diagnosis.

Where are my records stored?

Door observations and diary entries stay in this browser’s local storage. They are not synced between devices. Private browsing, storage limits or clearing site data can remove them. Export JSON backups; import merges records by ID. Calendar files create events only after you add them to your calendar app.
